The speakers main point of the speech was explaining how only those who believe in the American dream today are only the ones who have already attained it. He describes the importance of diversity and oppritunity in the nation. He develops a claim that the dream is within all of us and we need to help each other work hard and improve ourselves and the nation. The speaker addresses ethos by explaining a story of his grandmother who worked hard to achieve the american dream, he relates to the audience by explaining how somewhere within our family generations there is someone who lived a story similar to his own family's, which creates a trust and connection between the speaker and the audience. He focuses on pathos by connecting to the audiences emotions by describing life for people who face challenges. Logos is also used throughout a majority of the presentation, he uses facts and data as well as sources such as magazines to support his idea. The speaker includes facts from the World magazine, for example how in 1988 America was "ranked best place to live in the world for opportunity." He included this to support his idea of the desire people have to live in this country and how the nation is full of hope and opportunity for all. He also addresses the magazine for a fact that explains the United States is ranked number one among all rich nations to have the highest number of children living in poverty. The most compelling point in the presentation was how he encourages us to work hard for each other so we can achieve the american dream we all desire. The speaker does a very good job making eye eyecontact and raises his voice throughout the presentation in order to emphasize the idea he is trying to deliver. He speaks in a positive tone and describes what we can do to work hard for the dream.
This Ted talk relates to the American dream in many ways. He introduces his presentation by describing a story of his grandmother who came to america seeking a better life, however once she arrived she faced many challenges but still helped other struggling people along the way. She was an immigrant who was striving for a better life, and worked hard to do whatever it took. All over the world people desire a dream of success for their children and future generations to come, creating a global dream for an improved future. The speaker reminds us that in each family there is a similar story to his grandmothers, and that we need to continue to help people who are facing difficulty and continue to strive for our dreams no matter how big they may be. This concept connects to the American value of handwork and perseverance through hard times which helps motivate us throughout each day to make a better life for ourselves and the generations ahead of us to come. He also describes the connection of diversity and opportunity to the success of the country, because without these two unique things our country has, we wouldn't be at our fullest potential. The unity within America creates a place like nowhere else on the planet and creates the unified dream. People help each other when in need which strengthens America as a whole and creates an achievable, unified American dream. During an interview of Roberto Acuna, he explains that “people would help each other” as well as “if you were feeling bad one day, somebody would help” (Acuna). This portrays the support Americans provide for each other and the unity of the county which helps the nation grow. The speaker explains the passion Americans have for the country and the American dream that lives in all of us.
I really enjoyed watching this Ted talk, I agree with a lot of ideas he had, such as how anyone in this country is able to have their own personal dream, instead of it just being "The American Dream" we are trying to achieve, it is more so a "Human Dream" that every person desires a happy successful life, no matter from what background or culture. I liked how the speaker engages the audience to look within themselves to realize the American Dream is within all of us. He gives the audience hope for an achievable American dream that we can all strive for together in unity as one nation. I learned that it was very difficult for the immigrants to move from their old country's jobs to America because of different laws such as prohibition in America. It was also hard for them to come to a new country with a lack of skills and money. This speech was very benificial for Minorities, immigrants, and the people of lower hardworking classes to help them maintain a positive attitude through hard times and challenges which they face.
