The speaker explains his ideas of the working class throughout his presentation, he explains how the American Dream is not achievable unless the person is lucky. He describes how he was fortunately lucky, however people in conditions similar to his are not able to work enough to get ahead and be successful. Vance explains his idea that living in a low income area or unstable home makes it much more difficult to achieve the dream, and he describes it is important to have good mentors to overcome the challenging obstacles the low income Americans must face. By using ethos the speaker gives examples of his personal experiences and his family history growing up in a poor city in the Rust Belt, establishing credibility because he lived the experience himself. He also establishes credibility by explaining how he was able to rise into wealth through his education and go to Law school at Yale. The speaker addresses pathos by describing specific family stresses of the past, including his family using drugs and the hardships of financial issues. As well as he relates his story to others facing hardships in poor areas and unstable homes, it impacts the listeners emotions because the audience wants to help these people after hearing about the hardships the speaker faced. He does a good job of connecting himself to the audience and using his past to describe and support his idea. The speaker describes the loss of a hopeful American dream due to variety of reasons in lower economic areas and unstable homes including issues of drugs, such as heroine in his own personal story, domestic violence, and failing schools dramatically which cause a decrease in the chance for children in low income areas to have the opportunity for a successful life.
This presentation relates to the American value of independence, helping yourself be to the fullest potential as well as value of dedication to make the life the most successful it can be. For example, the speaker describes ways to succeed the American Dream by providing for yourself a good education, if not provided for you, and to find helpful mentors along the way. The presentation reflects the global dream of success, and how everywhere around the world people desire to better themselves so they can prosper and support their families.
I did not like this presentation because the speaker did not engage the audience and needed more enthusiasm in his tone. I learned about what life was like from his own story of growing up in a low economic region and how he was able to overcome family instability and challenging financial obstacles. His story of his success gives other people in his conditions hope and inspiration for a successful future life. He described how any person in America is able to achieve their dream, however it takes a lucky person to be successful in fulfilling it.
